the truth about salt

Welcome to our first ever blog post. It’s a really exciting time for us and we’re so so happy we have the opportunity to talk about what we love. We started Gourmet Raw because we want to make healthy eating tasty, easy and fun.

We believe food can be your medicine. The right foods have the ability to make you feel physically and mentally amazing.Through the blog we want to challenge what’s readily accepted and propose alternative options and view points that we've found along the way. We hope that you find it interesting. Please let us know your thoughts and comments and whether you’d like us to talk about something in particular.

For our first post I wanted to talk about something that’s likely to be on every kitchen table around the world. We get told it's really bad for us but many of us don't know why. Yes that’s right I want to talk about salt. When people talk about salt they are usually referring to refined table salt, or sodium chloride. There is a massive difference between these salts and the unrefined salts I am going to talk about. If you stop reading now and simply throw out your table salt and replace it with an unrefined sea salt we'll have achieved our goal.

Ordinary table salt goes through a great deal of processing before it gets to you. After being dried at over 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and chemically cleaned it ends up being approximately 97.5% sodium chloride and 2.5% chemicals such as iodine and moisture absorbents. Preservatives and things like calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate and aluminum hydroxide to improve the table salts ‘pourability’. The extreme heat alters the salts natural chemical structure that then appears completely foreign to the body. As a result of all the processing this salt now has independent crystals that are totally isolated from each other and now requires the body to use a lot of energy to metabolize it. In order for the body to neutralize the excess salt, water molecules must surround the sodium chloride to break them up into separate ions. To do this, water is taken from your cells which, in turn, affects the fluid balance in your cells. Every gram of excess sodium chloride your body has to neutralize uses up 23 grams of cellular water. This accumulation of fluid in your tissues can then contribute to things likes cellulite, rheumatism, arthritis, gout, kidney and gall bladder stones to name a few. Processed foods are loaded with table salt to basically make the big manufacturers more profitable. Salt is largely used as an inexpensive ingredient that can make overcooked, bland and void of nutrient food taste better.

By contrast unrefined natural sea salt, that hasn’t been through all these processes is extremely good for you and necessary for many biological processes. This unrefined salt is 84% sodium chloride and 16% other naturally occurring minerals, including many trace minerals like silicon, phosphorous and vanadium. In our products we use unrefined Himalayan crystal sea salt that is very special. It’s completely pure, having spent many thousands of years maturing under extreme tectonic pressure, far away from exposure to impurities, so it isn’t polluted with the heavy metals and industrial toxins of today. Himalayan salt contains 84 trace minerals and it’s crystalline structure actually stores vibrational energy , which is restorative to your body.
The crystal salt from the Himalayas doesn’t burden your body like refined salts so and its actually very difficult for your body to absorb too much crystal salt since there are effective feedback loops that regulate this process. Natural crystal salt always promotes a healthful balance and does not contribute to high blood pressure like refined table salt.
As you can probably see we’re pretty passionate about good quality unrefined salt. Ditch the table salt and you’ll be amazed as to how you start to feel.

Remember, as with everything, too much of something is bad. Don’t let that scare you though because even too much water and air are bad for us.
